First time watching it. It was really cute. Really enjoyed it in 3D. I bought a bunch of squishmellows of this series in response. Not scary at all. Good for the entire family.

There is a lot of irony to this film. First, Disney was not confident in this film's success, so they released under their "Touchstone" brand. The film then went on to be a big hit. The film would be right at home with the Disney Renaissance of animation. Second, it is often referred to as a Tim Burton film, despite not being written nor directed by him. It is just based off of a poem that he wrote. But this film embodies Tim Burton's style so much, it is synonymous with his M. O. Third, before this film stop motion was most often connected with Christmas specials. Stuff like "Rudolph" and other Rankin/Bass shorts. But after this film, stop motion was used far more for creepy Halloween stuff. Films like "Wendell and Wild" or anything done by Liaka Studios. It is often debated whether this counts as a "Halloween" or "Christmas" movie and itself represents the transition of medium's reputation.
OK, enough of the strange place this movie finds itself, how is the movie? It is really, really good.
There is a lot of music in this, more than the typical Disney film of the time, 11 in total. And at least 10 of those 11 are great memorable songs, Danny Elfman shines in this film.
The animation is a huge step forward in stop motion. It is the first one where you can see more of the motion and less of the stop.
The character of Jack Skellington is a ton of fun. Despite being in a world that should be full of darkness and gloom, he is relentlessly upbeat and optimistic. When he sees Christmas, he wants to share it with everyone. He may be misguided, but you feel his good intentions.
On the negative side, being based on a short poem, there isn't quite enough here to last the 1hr 16 mins. The plot points of Mr. Boogey and Sally's visions feel tacked on to pad the runtime. But there are some enjoyable scenes that come from it.
In the end, this is both a sweet treat in my Trick or Treat bag and a nice present in my stocking.

If you like Nightmare Before Christmas, you will love seeing it in 3D at the movie theater! Out of the 3D movies I've seen in my life (currently age 30 as of this review), this has been my favorite movie to see in 3D so far. The detail in both sound and visuals feels so much deeper and more textured than watching the movie at home. The stop motion animation is gorgeous in this format. Absolutely worth the money in my opinion!
