This is one of way too many examples to show how dissociated these "critics" are on here. Surely no one pays these "people" to just tell us how dumb they are.

The fact that there are people on here giving this movie, a bad Reputation because of the graphics is comical. What do you guys not understand that it was made in the 90’s. This movie is beyond good and should be way higher on the audience side of ratings

Honestly I think the reviewers here must have seen a different film because this movie was a massive part of my childhood and spurred my love of books. I was the intended audience for this movie when it was released and can honestly say it left a lasting impression. It's references, the imagination, the score, the animation , the horror! Everything combined to make an epic children's movie. I've even shared this with kids now and they love it too. Only negative is at the end he doesn't wear a helmet because he's "brave" now but apart from that this is one of the best children's movies ever.

Weird movie that I somewhat enjoyed with some likable characters and a fairly predictable plot

After 30 years this is still another one of my favorite childhood 90's flicks Sadly it ended up being trashed by critics and lost $20 million at the box office making the director let down removing it off his resume but has sustained life on home video even getting a blu ray release and a reappraisal by its own visual effects artists Richard Tyler is a young boy who’s overly cautious and relies on statistics to get by Even his parents are worried he won’t take any risks living his life After running a small errand a storm forces Richard to take shelter in a huge library run by Christopher Lloyd as a librarian But upon exploring it further Richard trips and is transported into a magical world where he becomes an illustration The man in charge is a powerful wizard called The Pagemaster; keeper of the books and master of the written word Richard in order to find his way home must look through dozens of books but he must also conquer his fears He has the assistance of three talking books named Adventure, Fantasy, and Horror Richard and his newfound friends encounter such characters of literature from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Long John Silver, Captain Ahab, Moby Dick, Mother Goose, and a fire breathing dragon McCauley Culkin performs amazingly well next to voice actors like Whoopi Goldberg, Frank Welker, and Patrick Stewart We can’t live our life based on statistics, we have to take some risks in life, we would never have the courage to face our own fears if we were brought to the very end, sometimes we have to fight to make a wish come true, whatever we imagine can make our dreams come true This movie actually does a good job opening up children's eyes to the wonderful, literary world of books from director Joe Johnston Sure alot of famous characters are just glanced over but that's what our parents are for to look for and read about them A terrific score by James Horner makes it memorable along with the main song by Wendy Moten The animation is cool throughout combing hand drawn and some CGI, but the live-action scenes could use some more pizazz The voice-acting is terrific, too and Llloyd is phenomenal as well playing two parts Maybe it isn't that memorable but it is a fun, cool-looking, and music-soothing experience

Saw this movie when I was 7 and it’s stuck with me ever since. The horror part was really creepy (in a good way) as a kid.
