The Scary of Sixty-First

To me this feels like a silly smirking film with zero insights into abuse or conspiracy theories.

All of this takes place in what Nekrasova has likened to Eyes Wide Shut New York, and it is, in fact, as alluring as its influences, pulling viewers into a film that teeters between absurdly funny and absurdly frightening.

As important as that subject is, this film doesn't work for me. I think it's contrived and pointless. It tells us nothing new.

As political allegory, it's fairly obtuse. As film-making, it's spirited rather than polished but that has its attractions. As comedy, it's darker than pitch. Be prepared for precious bodily fluids.

Mashing pentagrams, Prince Andrew and autoerotic asphyxiation into a lubricious slop, "The Scary of Sixty-First" feels suffocating and flat.

The filmmaking lets down Nekrasova's concept, particularly in a cluttered and sometimes incompetent final act, leaving viewers to wonder what it all means, or if it means anything at all.

Do we really need a film where the despicable actions of sexual abusers are brushed off as the fault of Satan and his followers, or should this have been a film that held Epstein and others like him accountable?

The Scary of Sixty-First doesn't always completely come together, but Nekrasova has crafted an uncompromising and compelling movie that plays like a slap in the face and isn't easily forgotten.

This is a movie where when you hear what it is, your first reaction is gonna be, “That should not have been made,” and while I often defend that kind of movie… this movie should not have been made.

At times it goes into some chilling elements, and then other times it swerves off the rails.
