The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
audience Reviews
, 90% Audience Score- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThis movie is like a stroll along a path that winds its way through a beautiful glen. Along the way there are the colorful pops of flowers and the sharpness of thorns, but we see that both reveal to the main character (and to us) the deeper meaning of the story: that life if meant to be lived, each moment present, and that we are meant to feel: the good, the bad, the ugly, the hard, and the joyous. As my walk through the glen came to a close, I found myself stopping to look back and ponder the trail from which I had just come. I stood there for a long time.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars2 hours and 17 minutes of anime fantasy. Rated PG for Thematic Elements, Some Violent Action, and Partial Nudity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsBeautifully haunting folk tale.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsRating: 87%. This was truly a beautiful story, and props to the writers because I do not know how they come up with this stuff. Very unique. I will say the animation threw me off at first because I was thinking of Spirited Away Animation, but this was like a pastel drawing or a watercolor style animation. I didn't like that as much, but it was still beautiful and had some signature Studio Ghibli animation aspects, such as the movement and character styles. There were so many themes and deeper meanings. I did find myself on the edge of confusion at times, but eventually it became clearer. I also enjoyed the voice acting and music, as they both were done beautifully.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsIt is very good, it just gets slow around the middle, but the story hooked me enough to keep watching and I think it was worth it.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsI feel like this story has basically been told before, where objects have to be brought.
- Rating: 0.5 out of 5 starsWow this is unbelievably boring.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsA bice movie, a special animation, but It does not make this movie so good, just good, but the story about kaguya and her strict father and the fate that requires her to be a princes makes the movie wonderful.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsIn a world where beauty and melancholy intertwine, I found myself captivated by the enchanting visuals of "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya." The animation, distinct from typical Studio Ghibli fare, drew me in with its watercolor-like artistry, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that felt both nostalgic and fresh. As the story unfolded, I was struck by the poignant journey of the princess, whose mysterious origins and bittersweet fate lingered long after the credits rolled. The film’s unique narrative structure, devoid of conventional storytelling, offered a refreshing perspective that resonated deeply with me. Watching it on a streaming platform, I was reminded of the power of animation to convey profound emotions, making this film a true masterpiece that I wholeheartedly recommend.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars"Tale of Princess Kaguya is a 2013 Studio Ghibli film. Despite being from Ghibli it has a very unique art style compared to their other anime classics. It still hits all the usual Ghibili trademarks, the animation is still beautiful, the Joe Hisaishi music is lovely, and the voice acting is top-notch. The story is based on an old Japanese fairy-tale. A bamboo cutter finds a tiny girl in the woods one day as he is cutting bamboo. He and his wife then raise this girl that they see as a gift from the heavens. The gril grows up at a magically accelerated rate, and the adoptive parents try to understand how they should raise their newly found daughter. The story takes a few different twists and turns, none of which I'll spoil here. But as soon as I thought I was getting an idea of where the story was going, and what direction it was taking, the plot would take an unexpected turn. I liked that about this movie. It was not clear from where the movie began exactly how the movie ends. Likewise, there are various themes and lessons that could be extracted from this tale. The different choices that the story makes may confuse or even frustrate some viewers. For me, I like the fact that it takes such bold swings with the story. But the film is not without its shortcomings, here are some things I didn't care for in the story. The relation between the daughter and parents, particularly the father, is that typical kids' movie, parents don't listen or understand trope. For as excited as the parents were to raise this heaven child, they don't end up spending all that much time with her. Usually they pawn her off on villagers or servants to do the raising for them. Second would be Kaguya herself. There are many parts throughout the story where her motivation will drastically shift. Even one point where the narrator simply says that she became like a "completely different person". It can become difficult to understand a character's motivation when they are so frequently changing. The expert presentation and unique story with many unexpected story points is enough for me to recommend this movie. It may be a little sketchy in places, but it comes together in the end.
