I can't decide if it's so bad it's good or if it's just plain old bad.

“The Tutor” ... could have benefitted from a few more drafts, or perhaps complete abandonment.

The film and [Garret] Hedlund start out strong, but then both unravel just as the lead character does.

Drives into every plot hole and then unites them into a canyon.

Formulas are what Ethan should be helping Jackson study, not what the film should make the audience endure.

It’s surprising that “The Tutor” didn’t end up in the less-traveled end of a Netflix queue — because if idiotic psychological thrillers like this one escape their natural habitat, what are streaming services good for?

This thriller tries to subvert the old stalker/psychopath subgenre, but, saddled with two deeply unsympathetic characters and moving in odd, baffling rhythms, it ultimately frustrates and annoys.

Unfortunately, in trying to reinvent the wheel, it tries to do something so different with the genre that it ends up becoming a confusing mess where audiences may not know how to feel.

It’s always nice to encounter low-budget thrillers that unexpectedly hit the mark. This stumbling, ineffectual effort isn’t one of them.

After watching The Tutor, it's obvious that the filmmakers need lessons on how to make a good movie. This flimsy drama about a tutor stalked by a student ends up falling apart with avoidable plot holes and a stupid ending.
