The Two Faces of January
audience Reviews
, 48% Audience Score- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsIt's like a Greek drama in the modern world: jealousy, distrust, treachery, reconciliation, catharsis… There is a vibrating tension hiding in the background throughout the entire film. You know that more terrible things will happen, but you do not know to whom, how, and when, so you are just waiting and waiting… Great film with great actors!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsThe European visuals are picturesque and the cast, particularly Mortensen, is outstanding. I appreciated the father/son dynamic that’s suggested between the male leads although it’s not satisfactorily developed. Also, Dunst doesn’t seem to have much to do during her all-to-brief appearance other than to perhaps fleetingly tempt the Issac character. But I need more than just pretty locations and good performances. This film overall simply isn’t compelling or involving enough to generate enough interest or suspense to make it worthwhile.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsThis Hitchcock inspired thriller is big on plot twists but does lose it's way a bit in the final act and at times seems a tad overstylised. Still an entertaining enough flick.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsI enjoyed this noir thriller; it kept me guessing to the end. Very good acting and filmmaking. Suspenseful and kept my interest.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsTense enjoyable drama set in Greece and Turkey.
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsAt least a thousand cigarettes died in this movie, that's one thing I know for sure. Viggo had one hanging off his lip in every scene - which I found very distracting. He also carried two suitcases all over hell's half acre that was supposed to hold all their belongings, which seemed odd considering all the outfits his wife wore during her brief appearance. The movie seemed to just skim over the story with no real suspense or drama. I was trying to decide halfway through if I should give up or finish watching.
- Rating: 1.5 out of 5 starsI checked it out because it had three very noticeable names as the leads. I was expecting so much more based on that alone. I suppose the premise was interesting, but the movie was just so... so dull! I don't even know how to improve it. The film was just boring, and, in some spots, nonsensical.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsAn underrated and under appreciated hidden gem of a film.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsThe European locale and trio of leads make this thriller pretty fun.
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars3 people died in this movie. For no good reason. Maybe just to make it more thrilling? The real problem is not the acting. Everyone's great. But you never really know the motivations of the three main characters. You never really find out if they're good or bad. Of course they're both. But the movie does not make it clear what is causing them to act the way they do. One scene seems to show something about their personality. But then the next scene shows just the opposite. We see anger. We see dishonesty, reactions. But we never see the thought process. And the last 5 minutes feels like it was prescribed by a Committee of studio executives.
