    A “B” movie with “A” stars.

Bogart and Stanwyck are the reasons to see the film. They're true movie stars and electric on screen. But that's the best I can say about the pedestrian story. Its almost saved by the intriguing ending, then Geoffrey (Bogart) opens his mouth as he's being escorted by the police to offer them a drink, and the only reaction the officers (and you as a viewer) can give is dismay. So that's what this movie is: almost.

It's got tone and acting issues which are the main problems. Which is crazy given the all star power between Bogie & Stanwyck. First off no one is really that likeable, even Stanwyck who is hard to get behind given she was a homewrecker right from the start. so its hard to feel any sympathy for her even depite her being the best actor in this. Bogart especially during the ending is over the top and is very clearly not sure how to be a villian. The kid is never likeable either and acts like a 45 year old which I found bizarre. She should've been more like Natalie Wood in Miracle on 34th Street. Mature for her age but also a naive child at the same time. Add in the wooden dated acting of the doctor and supporting cast and you get the biggest issue is no one is that likealbe or charming. This leads to despite some solid camerawork, moody atmposphere, and a decent soundtrack a very dry feeling throughout the entire thing. the plot is actually good it's just the characters/casting really hold this back from being anything special and the dry tone this has because of that. Also, the editing is decent but this feels like in the second half it becomes almost a silent expressionist picture at times and doesn't really match the first half. It comes across a bit bizarre, if the entire thing had been like that from the start it may have worked and helped with the fumbled acting. It does get a bit unfocused towards later second half jumping around between quite a few characters but it works enough still. This has its moments but I can't really recommend this to anyone except hardcore fans of the two leads. This can be skipped by most even though there really isn't anything wrong with it, but it doesn't really do anything that right either.

Bogart is so unconvincing and unlikable from the jump it is hard to watch.

With Barbara Stanwyck and Humphrey Bogart being my all time favorite Actors I had to own this Dvd. Naturally for anyone who appreciates a suspense Noir this is it ! Humphrey Bogart puts on a spectacular performance as the Mad Artist driven by his work's obsessions and desires. Barbara Stanwyck never looked lovelier as the Heroine trying to solve this mystery. Every detail surrounding the foreboding dark atmosphere in this Noir classic fits each Scene perfectly. From the windy Autumn nights to the storms raging within a Killers twisted mind. This is Bogart at his most diverse role yet. Out of all of his most famous performances I am surprised this Movie didn't get the recognition it so rightfully earned. Its one of my top favorites for sure! Especially the unforgettable line:" Would you care for a drink? A glass of Milk perhaps?"

Bogart a bad guy. Very interesting suspense. . & ALEXIS SMITH smokin hot. Oh, and the very sophisticated young daughter was amazing. Saw on movie channel 6-2020.

If you are either a Bogart fan or Stanwyck this is one you cant miss! Fun mystery film with great performances and the always beautiful Barbara Stanwyck and always cool Bogie. This was never destined to be a "Laura" or "The Maltese Falcon" in terms of mystery or noir- but a fun film from Hollywood's golden (best) age.

Barbara Stanwyck is a Woman in Peril in this by-the-number flick cut from the same cloth as Hitchcock's Suspicion or Cukor's Gaslight (that is, we must ask is Humphrey Bogart going to kill his new second wife?). However, The Two Mrs. Carrolls isn't as good as those earlier films and no matter how hard Bogie glowers or Stanwyck frets, the suspense doesn't seem to build. The script (or director Peter Godfrey) just doesn't seem to bother with the possibility that Bogie isn't a villain - we know that from day one. There are a few nice touches - a precocious child, a blunt maid, bumbling Nigel Bruce (but wait, he _was_ in Suspicion too, hmmm). However, nothing rises above routine here and this is why it appears nowhere on the lists of Bogart or Stanwyck films to see. So, don't.

Rather silly thriller about crazed artist Humphrey Bogart who paints his wives as Angels of Death and then murders them. Barbara Stanwyck plays his latest wife who then goes through all sorts of Rebecca-like fear and emotional turmoil about her new husband's intentions. Barbara is good, but Bogie seems miscast, though it's these two stars that make the film watchable and entertaining enough to be worth watching.
