Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts is a taut thriller sprinkled with wry humour and packs grounded emotional resonance. The latter is a surprise for a film that’s sold as a romp, which it still is, but it is as focused on its characters as it is on explosions

Credit the script for its thoughtful character development and getting deeper just when most will think it never will.

It's silly but still heartening, this idea that by saving each other, we might also be able to save ourselves.

Even amid such familiar mayhem, Schreier finds fresh, vivid angles. The action is clear and coherent; the character dynamics strike the right balance of earnest sincerity and glib humor.

The movie features not only some of the best actors in the MCU, but some of the funniest.

I enjoyed the interaction between the characters, but it is one joke...

Thunderbolts* presents a threat like we think we’ve seen before, only to reveal an unexpectedly relatable one and a solution that’s a clever, refreshing surprise. It throws viewers a curveball that makes this team of misfits truly take flight.

A narrative breath of fresh air for Marvel, harkening back to the Phase 1 days for the studio, where character writing trumps CGI slugfests. While still held back by a by-the-numbers plot and franchise fatigue, the film is carried well by Florence Pugh.

Dreary paint-by-numbers setup for a (hopefully) better film

Despite tackling mature themes rarely found in the MCU, its narrative seems predictable to me, and the lack of hook often leaves its group of antiheroes, rebranded as The New Avengers, in the void. [Full review in Spanish]
