Under the Cherry Moon
audience Reviews
, 67% Audience Score- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsIt's nothing short of a cult classic. Prince's Charm, combined with the creative direction and soundtrack makes this movie the Dark Horse of the Prince Trilogy.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsUnder The Cherry Moon may not be as good as Purple Rain, but it is a bit more story-focused. Despite a number of weird moments that are in the film, I honestly enjoyed it. Prince fans will without a doubt like it, but it's not really a film for everyone.
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsHim Not sure what Prince was doing in this well what he is going for will give better rating once I figure it out
- Rating: 1.5 out of 5 starsSophomore slumps are a real thing. Prince's Purple Rain is considered a critical and financial success. Under the Cherry Moon in my opinion is just not good and it shows Prince did hit a sophomore slump. In fact, Under the Cherry Moon is a poorly executed film. Not only that, the film contains forgettable musical numbers. To top it all off, Prince, Steven Berkoff, and Kristin Scott Thomas were overacting throughout the entire film. Under the Cherry Moon is not a film in my opinion. It's nothing more than a 100 minute music video.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsPrince's best movie!! Absolutely hilarious! I loved the comedy element of this one!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsSay what you like about this movie, but if you are a Prince fan it's the greatest movie of all time after The Godfather! Lol It's so much fun. A capsule of Prince at his most Swag!
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsThe consummate artist may have been in over his head putting together a plausible screenplay which seems the take a backseat to the stunning visuals, wonderful choice of black and white and obvious music strengths of the film
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsOkay, MAYBE my impression has to do with people calling this such a terrible film for 35 years, or maybe it's just that I've bailed out of a lot of drek that one finds on streaming services, but this was WAY better than I was expecting. Damning with faint praise, right? That's not my intent, just giving some context. Does it benefit considerably from having some strong actors alongside Prince and Jerome Benton? Absolutely! Had I the opportunity to do some dialogue edits, would I? Again, totes. BUT, this has more of an actual NARRATIVE PLOT than Purple Rain (which, let's be real, is an extended music video stitched together with scenes that turn it into kind of an allegory about becoming an adult). Take the music out of this and it's still a story. Prince's theatrical performance lacks the nuance that his lyrics/music performances are capable of, but that would be a high bar for one of the most talented musicians who's ever lived! How gifted CAN one dude be, after all?! It would just be too unfair if he was ALSO this really amazing actor! ;-) So, even at it's weakest, it's very watchable. And there's so much here that's charming or funny. I'm glad I finally saw it, and know exactly where all those gif reactions I like to use come from, now! It's one of those fluffy pieces of entertainment I may even find I crave from time to time, on a weekend afternoon when nothing else is happening!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 starsN France, Christopher (Prince) & his cousin Tricky (Jerome Benton) R gigolos who hear about a trust fund from a wealthy heiress Mary Sharon (Kristin Scott Thomas) & attract 2 her. Christopher & Mary eventually fall N love, leaving behind Tricky, who, N quarreling with envy, spills the beans about his cousin's real intentions. Meanwhile, Mary's parents disapprove of her new lover & want her 2 B with her fiancé N New York. Like many Prince music videos, Under the Cherry Moon has a lot of style, paying tribute to 1930's cinema with a black-&-white filter & a screwball premise, but the movie's plot has 2 many holes. 1st, why do these 2 low privilege guys travel 2 the Riviera 2 woo all these socialites, even though they don't speak French & probably have super-rich housewives N America? 2nd, wouldn't the plot B more interesting if Mary was the manipulator trying 2 steal Christopher's property & money? 3rd, if Chris & Tricky R so desperately 4 money, then how did they fly from United States 2 France with low income? Finally, why does Isaac have hired goons? He's not a Bond movie villain with world domination N his mind, he's a regular person who throws dinner parties & worships his wealthy family, like most millionaire stereotypes. While it has a great soundtrack by Prince, Under the Cherry Moon is 1 example of style-over-substance. (2 Stylized Misspellings on Napkins out of 5)
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsIt's only watchable because it's a Prince film...and he is fabulous in it.
