Venom

Ironically, the film lacks a bit of bite...

The film devotes way too much time to exposition (the first act feels like it goes on for about an hour), but once it gets going it's decent fun.

The result is so infantile that you barely care to wait for the mandatory mid-credit Marvel teasers.

A waste of a perfectly good Tom Hardy.

The movie becomes about Eddie and Venom coming to an arrangement. There is a lot of humour, including a sly riff on the Batman movies from Marvel rival DC Comics.

Venom could have brought a certain amount of sitcom silliness to a grimmer, grittier part of this world. But in the end, what might have been a bold and bracing new thing winds up being more of the same.

Overall this movie has plenty of issues, most stemming from the PG-13 rating which just throws the tone, dialog, and even the action scenes into tailspins.

Venom isn’t quite so satisfying in its action department, but the main character(s) possess enough charm together to not suck the life out of the film completely.



Venom tried something new in a familiar world of pop culture. The foundation built on fleshing out Brock’s character and motivations made it stand on its own as canon.

Pacing issues aside, Venom establishes the quirky Brock-Venom dynamic perfectly. A fun setup that hints at the chaos to come without overdoing it.
