Weird Science
audience Reviews
, 69% Audience Score- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsAn almost perfect, largely guiltless, 80s silly adventure movie. Endlessly quotable, and a joy from beginning to end. One may need to be under the influence to really appreciate now, but a solid and pure, Hughes endeavour.
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsYou know, I probably should have left this movie in the past. For little maniacs (a.k.a. teenage boys), Weird Science may be amusing, but this creation’s shortcomings are much more apparent when you’re an adult. I don’t feel like John Hughes really put much effort into the script or the directing. It’s simplistic and choppy, spending way too long on some scenes and rushing through others. It also has a mainly juvenile sense of humor, which is unlike Hughes’ other works of the time. Oingo Boingo’s song, “Weird Science,” may have stood the test of time, but the movie Weird Science definitely has not.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsI adore this movie from my childhood...still holds up and a fun time.Chet is funny.Robert downey jr before he became to big for his own britches.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsA stupid movie but entertaining and absurd enough to still hold your interest . Also it should be said this movie would never get made today and I think that alone makes it worth the watch.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsOne of the best teenager movies I've ever seen, if not the best. I say this at 48 years after seeing a lot of others.
- Rating: 1.5 out of 5 starsJust not enough talent or personality to carry the film, which is the big problem here. Usually Hughes films rely on some charismatic teens, they do not exist here. Hall is not very good as a lead, just forced performance and drowning. Paxton does breathe some life into film, but he's not in it enough. Quite frankly, the story is weak.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsGoofy, absurd, and hilarious, this is a classic John Hughes teen comedy that's still fun to watch after all these years. Anthony Michael Hall is especially on point here, and the amazingly beautiful Kelly LeBrock is perfect as the "every boy's dream girl" Lisa.
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsOn paper Weird Science ticks all my boxes for pure '80s gold, but somehow a lot of the fun is lost along the way. Largely the problem is structural, but there are directorial issues as well, and the story never really becomes more than an outline and an excuse for pretty girls and adolescent humour. Some rewrites and further development could have turned this into a real gem.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsDidn't watch it in 1985 and now I know why. An absolutely horrific script, terribly acted. Use these 90 minutes for literally anything else, I beg you.
