The plotting is far from perfect with some of the story seeming rather pointless, but thanks to well-written characters and stellar performances from the female cast, it manages to remain mostly engaging.

Nothing against the actors but that awkward smile at the end just about sums up the movie

Widows isn't a full-fledged heist film, despite what the trailers may have led you to believe. Yes, it does execute some impressive, tense sequences that fit within that criteria, but in reality, it's a raw, character-driven tragedy that gains momentum as it unwinds a meticulous yarn of converging stories, each resting on the shoulders of a committed star. In particular, Viola Davis, who's typically outstanding.

This film was unfortunately marketed as a heist film (there are two compelling heist sequences) instead of the intricate, mature, adult drama that it is. The story (screenplay by the outstanding Gillian Flynn & Steve McQueen) somehow manages to walk thin lines of themes including: death of a spouse, death of a child, interracial marriage, the intersection of church and politics, spousal abuse, female empowerment (some noble, some timeworn), and crime as friendship-builder. With all of that heft, the reason the film manages to still be entertaining is a credit to fine directing (McQueen) and exceptional acting from a cast including five different Oscar nominees and a basket full of amazing supporting performances. 11/09/19

Painfully slow. I watched speeded up and it was still a horrible experience. Don't waste your time.

An over abundance of the best in movie-making offers an absolute clinic on how to write, direct, cast, & perform successfully resulting in a thoroughly engaging & taut story that gives the audience just what it needs exactly when needed.
