Your Monster

An appropriately monstrous hit with audiences at London’s Sundance and Dublin’s Horrorthon festivals, this is not quite a fairy tale, but it comes close enough to cast a spell.

I absolutely loved it.

Caroline Lindy’s feature debut is a droll, if uneven blend of comedy, romance, fantasy and horror that relies heavily on the off-the-charts chemistry between Barrera and Dewey, who manages to convince as a charismatic romantic lead.

As fun as the boys are, this is Barrera’s show. She is tremendous, and seemingly having a tremendous amount of fun.

Where Lindy’s script may be slightly lacking, Barrera and Dewey are a match made in heaven, with a simple yet undeniable opposites-attract, will-they-won’t-they dynamic that left this writer longing for a series following their domestic exploits.

[Your Monster] has its charms, namely the backstage intrigue, onstage songs by the Lazours, and a disarming lead in Barrera.

When I say this movie has everything, I mean everything: Rom-com-horror-fantasy-MUSICAL. And it’s brilliant at every genre.

Yes, it’s better than “The Shape of Water,” as most movies and some headaches are. But the cross-species rom-com “Your Monster” gets stuck in narrative nowhere.

With a brilliant co-star and a script that doesn’t take itself too seriously, Lindy and Barrera deliver a tale of self-love that’s not so easily forgotten.
