Online Movie Ticket Sales Increase 31% in First Half of 2007: MovieTickets.com Reports Internet Sales Growth Outpacing Overall Box Office
MovieTickets.com Expects Record Summer Volume as Transformers™, new Harry Potter and other Blockbusters Staged for Success
(Los Angeles, CA - July 3, 2007) – Moviegoers are logging online more than ever to reserve a place in line for movie tickets, according to a study conducted by MovieTickets.com (www.movietickets.com), the world’s most powerful online movie ticketing provider. MovieTickets.com experienced an astounding 31% increase in overall online ticket sales for the first half of 20071 compared to the same time period in 2006, while overall box office receipts increased by nearly 3%.2
“Clearly online movie ticketing has become an integral part of consumers’ lifestyles. Planning ahead and committing to the in-theater experience has gone from a ‘want’ to a ‘need’ in many parts of the country,” said Joel Cohen Executive Vice President and General Manager MovieTickets.com. “And while e-commerce proliferation is a factor in our striking sales growth, we know that moviegoers are responding more and more to studio marketing campaigns to not only reserve their ticket for a must-see opening weekend film, but for all of their movie ticket buying.”
While the increase can also be attributed to the blockbuster heavy May 2007, online sales are still eclipsing overall box office receipts by double digits. MovieTickets.com is also reporting consistent year over year increases even through years when overall box office receipts increased slightly. Some highlights of the study include:
*31% increase in overall MovieTickets.com sales during first half of 2007 (January 2, 2007- June 30, 2007) compared to same time period in 2006. Overall box office increased by nearly 3% during same time period.
*41% increase in MovieTickets.com sales comparing its combined May & June 2006 and May & June 2007 sales totals while overall box office was up 2.4% in the same period.
*Dramatic 150% increase MovieTickets.com registered users from 2005 to 2007. The increase demonstrates the expanding use of online ticketing by moviegoers across all demographic profiles.
In terms of sales growth, MovieTickets.com expects continued sales success heading into the latter half of 2007 as the industry braces for more blockbuster film releases. Early indicators of MovieTickets.com sales volume include:
*Transformers™ is selling 10 times the amount of tickets as Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer at same point in sales cycle.
*Moviegoers have been buying Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix advance tickets since May 2007, nearly two months prior to the film’s mid-July open.
