Movie is amusing, but never out loud funny. The title dimwitted but spunky couple wins contest and get to move into a modern high tech home. Did I mention they have like a dozen annoying kids / brats? Hijinks ensue. Movie works best as a visual gag fest, contrasting their dirt poor living conditions, to the Kettles trying to survive the gadgetry of modern living. Thank you studio heads for cutting film down to an hour and fifteen minutes. Less is more.

These are some of the funniest movies ever made. Based on the characters first introduced in the Betty Macdonald book "The Egg and I", the movies "flesh out" the people written about in the laugh out loud book. Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride ARE the characters come to life! Do see all of the movies, you won't regret the time spent on them.

Pa's slothful approach to life always made me wonder how he fathered his many kids? A fun movie!

All the Ma and Pa Kettle movies are true classics, family friendly and very funny. I wish they still made movies like this.

1949 portrayal of natives is horrible and unfortunately not uncommon for that era. #94

The charming first film in the 10 part series that they went on to make. It's amazing considering these guys where just side characters in Egg & I but made enough impact to get their own films. This is the story of Ma & Pa Kettle + the tribe of children getting the opportunity to get to live in luxury modern home. They are simple people the Kettles & the struggle with the house immensely & that's where the humour lies. It's easy watching with a lot of laughs....

<a href="http://cooltext.com"><img src="http://images.cooltext.com/2045282.png" width="104" height="30" alt="My Review" /></a></a> <b><i>"For smokin' or chewin' Reed's 'Hold All's Most Fittin' it's handy for ashes and dandy for spittin'."</b></i> The Kettles and their 15 children are about to be evicted from their rundown rustic home when Pa wins the grand prize by coming up with a new tobacco slogan. Birdie Hicks is jealous of the family's new wealth, which includes a completely automated modern home, and accuses Pa of stealing the slogan until reporter Kim Parker proves Birdie wrong. Hold onto your hats because America's favorite hillbilly family is here. Released on April 1, 1949 - it's April Fool's Day for all of you! - <i>Ma And Pa Kettle</i> was directed by Charles Lamont and was the first in an eight-part series of comedy films. I've been recently appealed by this title through a television broadcast when I was looking for good old black and white titles for me to watch at the moment. It's been long ever since I've seen the folksy mountain culture in fiction; through television it was <i>The Beverly Hillbillies</i> and now with film it was <i>Ma And Pa Kettle</i>. I pretty much liked it for the way they were portrayed positively although I had no idea what was going on in the storyline. Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride performed in the titular roles that I can say that they are another great comedy duo that I've been running into during my fascination of comedy in the olden days besides Abbott + Costello and Dean Martin + Jerry Lewis. <div style="width:449px;"><a href="http://www.flixster.com/photos/marjorie-main-ma-and-pa-kettle-marjorie-main-10081582"><img src="http://content8.flixster.com/photo/10/08/15/10081582_gal.jpg" border="0"/></a><div style="text-align:center;font-size:10px;"><a href="http://www.flixster.com">Flixster</a> - Share Movies</div></div> Overall, I can say that the first installment of the <i>Ma And Pa Kettle</i> film series is a very good entry indeed, and now that I've seen this and the second movie, <i>Ma And Pa Kettle Go To Town</i>, I hope to see the six others. Check it out if you like old black and white comedies.
